German wild card Simon Greul rallied to beat Janko Tipsarevic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 Monday in the first round of the German Open. Fernando Verdasco, Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils all pulled out of the clay-court tournament because of injuries. The top-seeded player is Gilles Simon, followed by Nikolay Davydenko and French Open runner-up Robin Soderling.
